If your going to be spending some time in Austria, then it makes sense to include Vienna on your itinerary. After all, it is the capital of this affluent country, and has many hotels, tourist attractions, and cultural hot spots to visit. Vienna has a diverse historic story, as well as being known to many as the birth place of classical music. If not the birth place, at least the primary influence of it. I mean this is one of the few cities in the world that still has balls every year. Yes, balls, as in dances with orchestras, fancy dresses, ballrooms and lots of beautiful people. If you visiting the city, it would be worthwhile you time, to find out if there are any going on. I’m sure there probably will be, as there are like 200 that occur every year. Getting yourself invited to one may be a bit tricky, but it’s definitely worth the effort.
Of course, if your into opera, music, or theater your going to have to attend a few concerts or plays. This is Vienna after all. They practically invented the stuff. Even if your not that much into culture, maybe it’s time to check it out. Who knows when you’ll be back again, and perhaps seeing a show in the Burgtheater, the Volkstheater Wien or the Theater in der Josefstadt will help you get a little more in touch with your artsy side. It’s worth a try. Opera has never been my thing, but visiting the Wiener Musikverein or the Staatsoper might just win me over. At the very least, being part of the spectacle, is sure to be a moment to remember.
I’m a big fan of museums, and this town has them in spades. And with good reason, as Vienna is not only home to classical music, but also to classic art from the likes Gustav Lkimt and Franz Xaver Messerchmidt. While it’s true, that painting and sculptures may not be the most physically engaging type of vacation, but once you spend some time doing it, you’ll really start to appreciate it. At least for the time that your there.
Architecture is probably my most favorite thing to do in any city I visit. I really do enjoy taking in the details of old and new buildings that are visually interesting. It’s also an activity to do that doesn’t require a lot of planning or expense. Vienna is full of both old, modern and art nouveau architecture. I do highly recommend bringing a good camera when exploring Viennas architecture though. Specifically one with a good zoom lense. It’s really the best way to capture the detail of many of those magnificent buildings.
That’s just a sampling of the things you can spend time with in Vienna. I haven’t even gotten into hotels or restaurants yet. That will have to be a topic for another day.
