One of the hottest holiday destinations in recent years is Berlin. This is partly because of history. In 2009 the city celebrated an anniversary marking 20 years since the fall of the Berlin wall. This was such a historic moment that many people who lived through it and watched it on television came to visit many of the sights of the old wall. But another reason for the city’s popularity is its cost with a huge variety of options for cheap holidays in Berlin, not to mention availability of the cheapest flights.

The biggest reason for the low cost of visiting Berlin is the fact that so much of the city was destroyed during the war and wasn’t rebuilt for nearly five decades until reunification. The building boom that has happened since has completely transformed the city but also left it with a huge surplus of property. So flats are cheap and stores and restaurants don’t have to pay much in rent. This allows for a huge diversity of places. One can find all sorts of sweet and appealing cafes and restaurants in Berlin that will provide a fantastic meal for 10 euros a person. One can also find cheap hostels and other discount hotels that charge anything down to 10 euros a night for a bed or 25 euros for a small private room. It is hard to beat prices such as these in any other major city in Europe. For a similar price one can even rent a fully furnished apartment. Quite a few of my friends do this when visiting Berlin. That way they can cut costs by cooking a couple of meals for themselves. Even so, eating out need not cost much. Many hostels and cheap hotels offer an eat-all-you can breakfast for about 3 euros. It won’t be anything fancy. Mainly coffee and some bread or pastry with cheese, but if you are on a budget it will be more than adequate.

Even travelling to Berlin is cheap. If you book well enough in advance and take care to get a special fare then you pay virtually nothing on a low-cost flight from Britain or elsewhere in Europe. Trains are a good option too. And busses may take forever but also cost very little.
